Amboseli National Park Facts

Amboseli national park is a 390 sq. km park located southwest of the capital Nairobi and along the Kenya – Tanzanian border. The park is located in a similar savannah grassland region like the Masai Mara and Serengeti parks. This is a vast expanse of Masai country that runs inside and to the south of the Great Rift Valley system in Kenya and Tanzania. 

Amboseli national park is 280km south west of Nairobi and is the second most popular national park from the Masai Mara in terms of visitor received per year. The Amboseli national park is located just below the Mountain Kilimanjaro which is also the biggest attraction here.

What to See In Amboseli National Park

The Amboseli national park is known for its great views of Mt. Kilimanjaro which is located just next to the park on the Tanzanian side of the border. The Kilimanjaro view from Amboseli is one of the best for this mountain as it’s on the leeward side which is more plain and covered by less trees. The view of the Kilimanjaro is one of the greatest attractions to this park. 

Amboseli national park is also popular or the large populations of elephants that are more than 1200 animals. The Amboseli national park elephants are also the longest studied elephants in Kenya with a study running into 3 decades. The elephants can be seen anywhere in this park but mostly near the water ponds.

Amboseli is also known for the large herds of other animals including hippos, lions, cheetahs, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, leopards, hyenas, gazelles, elands, waterbucks, impalas, and much more. A game drive in Amboseli lasts for 5hrs and you will see as much wildlife in the park as you can.

You will also see a lot of birds in the park including kori bustard, secretary bird, Egyptian geese, kingfisher, go away bird, vultures, fish eagle, tawny eagle, wagtail, Madagascar bee eater, grey heron, giant heron, among others.

Amboseli National Park Day Trip Timings

6:00am: Depart Nairobi for Amboseli National Park

10:00am: Arrive in Amboseli and start the 5hr game drive with views of Kilimanjaro very close. Enjoy the game drive to see hundreds of animals including hippos, lions, leopards, giraffes, cheetahs, and many others.
 
1:00pm: Enjoy a picnic lunch on the observation hill.

2:00pm: Continue with another hour of game drive in the park looking for elusive animals.

3:00pm: Depart Amboseli park with an enroute game drive.

7:00pm: Arrive in Nairobi and drop off in your Hotel in the city.
